Enloe Welcomes New Chief Medical Officer, Honors Retiring Officer
CHICO, Calif., Sept. 19, 2023 – Enloe Medical Center is pleased to announce that Sean Maiorano, D.O., is the new Chief Medical Officer effective today. Dr. Maiorano will be taking over for Marcia Nelson, M.D., who will retire in December.
Dr. Maiorano, is a board-certified physician specialized in internal medicine. He became a member of Enloe’s medical staff in April of 2006 through Chico Hospitalist Group. Dr. Maiorano graduated from California State University, Chico, in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and from Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 2002. He completed an internship in Lansing, Michigan, in 2003, and he finished his residency and chief residency in Phoenix in 2006.
Currently the Medical Director of Enloe’s Graduate Medical Education program, he has served in several leadership roles at the medical center. Among his past roles are Secretary-Treasurer of the Medical Staff, Chief-of-Staff Elect and Chief of Staff. Additionally, he has served as vice president and president of the Chico Hospitalist Group.
“I welcome the challenges of this new role,” Dr. Maiorano said. “As a long-standing member of our medical staff and resident of Chico for 17 years, I’m committed to making sure we continue providing the highest quality of care. Like many of us, I have raised my family in the area, and it’s important to me that our hospital and health system are able to serve the needs of all the members of our community.”
Dr. Nelson joined Enloe in 1989 and became Chief Medical Officer in 2005. She has helped the organization successfully navigate many challenges during her 18-year tenure. She was a member of the team that brought Planetree, an organization that provides a framework for patient-centered care, to Enloe. Dr. Nelson launched the Enloe Quality Summit, a continuous improvement initiative. She was also instrumental in redesigning and reinvigorating the Enloe’s physician lounge. She is looking forward to spending time with her family, including her new granddaughter, and taking lots of road trips. She expects to remain active in physician leadership education.
“I’m so pleased to have Dr. Maiorano step into the role of CMO,” Dr. Nelson said. “He is an exceptional, experienced leader who will build on past successes and develop new ways to improve the quality of care in our region.”
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Nelson for her exceptional leadership and advocacy for our patients and medical staff. Her efforts have had a profound impact on the quality medical care we provide, and we will miss her greatly,” said Enloe’s President and CEO, Mike Wiltermood. “Dr. Nelson and Dr. Maiorano have been working together for the past few months to ensure a smooth transition of leadership, and we are very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Maiorano’s caliber as our new CMO. We look forward to his leadership and vision for the future.”
