Time Commitment & FAQs

You may have questions about volunteering at Enloe Health. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about our program.

There is an area I want to volunteer in, but it’s not posted. Can I apply?

At any given time, we are in active recruitment for specific areas based on the needs of Enloe Health; not all areas of volunteer service are seeking additional volunteers. While specific preferences may be considered, intake priority is given to areas for which we are currently recruiting.

If I apply today, when will I start?

Most volunteers complete the application and initial intake steps in about six weeks. Once that phase of onboarding is complete, the training period begins. The time needed for training is dependent on the service area. The more direct patient contact that you have, the more training hours are required; the less direct patient contact, the less training hours are required. This will be discussed during your interview.

What is my time commitment?

Generally, after training, you should be prepared to commit to a minimum of 50 hours and six months of service. Due to the nature of some service areas, a minimum 18-month commitment is expected. This will be discussed during your interview.

May I volunteer more than one shift per week?

Yes! Many of our volunteers give their time more than once a week, sometimes even in two or more service areas. We are especially interested in recruiting community members whose intent is to volunteer several years or more. Many of our volunteers are with us five, 10, 15 years and beyond!

I only need 20 hours of community service for school. Can I fulfill this requirement at Enloe?

Our minimum requirement is 50 hours and six months of service.

I have been ordered by a court to do community service. Can I fulfill this requirement at Enloe?

No. We do not accept volunteers doing court-ordered service.

I am looking for internship opportunities at Enloe Health. Do I go through Volunteer Services?

No. Students interested in an internship at Enloe must first be accepted by an Enloe department contact. Learn more about internship opportunities at Enloe Health.

I would like to observe/shadow a clinician. Do I go through Volunteer Services?

No. The role of a volunteer is non-clinical. Volunteer hours do not qualify as clinical hours. Learn about student opportunities, including clinical observation and job shadows at Enloe Health.
