Dr. Mazj has been in the medical field for over 20 years and is often asked why he chose oncology. His answer is clear. Dr. Mazj gets to provide hope to people with cancer, he enjoys the excitement of biomedical advances, and he wants to pay forward the generous mentorship he received from predecessors Drs. Howard, Potter and Keech. There is also a fourth reason — he gets to learn many lessons from his patients about courage, perseverance, strength and forgiveness.
According to Dr. Mazj, it is wonderful to care for patients at a time when an extraordinary confluence of social, medical, and scientific factors center on advances in cancer treatment. Outside of work, he reads a lot of oncology journals and gets so excited about the articles and new findings.
Dr. Mazj grew up under a dictatorship, experienced war, and has lived in at least 10 countries learning their cultures and languages. Now, he gets to enjoy hanging out with his teenage son and daughter. They often disagree when it comes to music tastes! They also discuss their generational differences on important issues—especially early American history. Dr. Mazj enjoys weekend outings with his son and a group of car enthusiasts. But oncology is really his greatest passion. He doesn't see it as work, it is his lifestyle.
