Call for Artists 2008
Enloe's Public Art Panels Project
Thank you to everyone who submitted art for our Art Panels Project.
Update: Thank you to everyone who submitted art for our Art Panels Project. Members of the Enloe Alcove Art Panel Project Jury met Sept. 4 and selected nine artists' proposals. The artists have begun to get started on their panels to be displayed on the parking structure. The artists will be named shortly. Panels will be due Oct. 10, 2008.
General Information
Our new four-level, three-story parking structure provides 742 parking spaces for employees, physicians and volunteers. Located between West 6th and West 7th Avenues between Magnolia Avenue and Esplanade, the parking structure has a Mediterranean-style stucco façade that complements the new patient tower’s exterior.
The west wall of the parking structure has nine alcoves, or “art panels,” inset in the large concrete pillars of the structure (see image at right). These nine panels are 5’x3’ with an arch at the top, similar to the style of a cathedral window and reflecting the style of the parking structure. Templates of the window will be made of ¾” MDO sign board and given to participating artists. The selected panels will be secured to the inset space by use of a hidden security locking system, widely used on existing art in the hospital.
Purpose of Art Panels
The art panel project will be one of the first physical aspects of the Planetree approach to health care at Enloe, in which the physical environment, indeed the very architecture and physical structure of facilities, creates a welcoming space. Along with enhancing the look of the parking structure, the art panel project opens a new opportunity for local artistic talent and provides new public art for the community.
The art panels will rotate on an annual or semi-annual basis. As they rotate off the parking structure, they will be auctioned. Proceeds will be shared evenly between the artist and Enloe’s Planetree Fund in hopes that the art panels will be a self-sustaining project.
Selection Process
A Call for Artists was widely distributed by Enloe’s Marketing & Communications department starting July 25, 2008. A panel of nine judges composed of a wide a range of representatives from the local art community and several Planetree Leadership Team members will convene Sept. 4 to select nine proposals. The selected artists will submit completed panels to the medical center by October 10, 2008.
It is envisioned that this selection process will take place three times and that Enloe Medical Center will purchase three of the panels at each auction. Nine panels will eventually become semi-permanent fixtures to the parking structure.
