Planetree

A patient-centered approach
to health care

Enloe Medical Center is committed to providing a nurturing environment where patients are surrounded by caring staff and supported by opportunities and resources that promote healing of the body, mind and spirit.

The Enloe Board of Trustees and Administration chose to pursue the Planetree
affiliation, finding it an exceptional approach to the delivery
of care with technology, medicine and complementary
healing.

As an affiliate of the Planetree program, Enloe has begun to implement initiatives that address some of the components of Planetree and is making strides in identifying, developing, and implementing patient-centered care in a healing environment.

What is Planetree?

Planetree is a non-profit organization that connects hospitals with tools and ideas for demystifying and personalizing the health care experience for patients and families. Planetree provides the ideas and resources to make a difference in hospitals and offers opportunities to share concepts with other hospitals. The patient-centered care approach  encourages:

  • interaction at all levels;
  • the support of family and friends;
  • education and access to information;
  • the role of nutrition, arts and spirituality;
  • the opportunity for expanded choices of treatment;
  • and extending the boundaries of health care into our communities to promote preventive health and wellness.

The organization takes its name from the planetree, or sycamore, under which Hippocrates taught his medical students.

Planetree’s Mission

To serve as a catalyst in the development and implementation of new models of health care which focus on healing and nurturing body, mind and spirit. These models integrate human caring with the best of scientific medicine and complementary healing traditions.

The Planetree Model

Since its founding in 1978 as a non-profit organization, Planetree has continued to be a pioneer in personalizing and demystifying the health care experience for patients and their families. Founded by a patient, the Planetree Model is committed to enhancing health care from the patient's perspective. It empowers patients and families through information and education, and encourages “healing partnerships” with caregivers to support active participation. Through organizational transformation, the Planetree Model assists hospitals in the creation of healing environments in which patients can be active participants and caregivers are enabled to thrive.

For more information about Planetree, visit www.planetree.org.

  • Food and Nutrition
  • Access to Information

  • Arts and Entertainment
  • Spirituality

Discover Planetree at Enloe

Enloe Medical Center has begun to implement patient-centered initiatives that address some of the components of Planetree.

Human Interaction

The Planetree approach starts at the organization’s core and builds momentum outward.

“Renewing the Spirit of Enloe” staff training retreats are taking place to provide all Enloe employees with understanding and techniques related to Planetree.  Retreats provide caregivers with the tools for nurturing and healing, building on the strong caring qualities they already demonstrate. Our discussions focus on the patient’s perspective and the vital role staff play in personalizing care.

Enloe is also introducing a nursing model designed to improve interaction, communication and care. RN-directed patient-centered care is currently being practiced on the First Floor Medical/Surgical nursing unit. A team of two licensed nurses and a certified nursing assistant cares for 10 patients, with the goal of enhancing delivery of care and increasing patient satisfaction. Over time, this approach will be rolled out to all nursing units.

Quiet Hospital Initiative

A calm, quiet place is ideal for the healing process—and a priority at Enloe. Our first step in managing noise was eliminating routine overhead paging in February 2008. Going forward we will measure noise levels at different times so we can identify the main culprits and evaluate ways to reduce overall noise in the hospital. The change also supports the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goal to improve communication between caregivers. Additionally, a soothing music pilot program is expected to launch soon in the Emergency Department.

Nutritional and Nurturing Aspects of Food

Enloe introduced new patient menus in March 2008, offering a larger variety of selections including more vegetarian options. Future updates will be based on patient feedback.

Healing Environment

The physical environment is vital to the healing process of patients.  Enloe will incorporate the Planetree concepts into our new building and existing patient tower creating a healing environment through interior design, including local artwork, furniture to accommodate overnight visitors and family lounges. Enhancing spirituality and providing a meditation room in the new patient tower where family members can gather to reflect, contemplate and feel a sense of peace.

Health Learning Center

Enloe is renovating a space for the Enloe Health Learning Center, which will give community members access to a broad array of health and medical information. People may come in looking for information about a disease or disorder affecting a family member, or perhaps to learn more about a medical diagnosis. This center will help them find key information they can trust.  A team of interested locals from Enloe, the Butte County Library and Chico State Library are working to develop a mission and core selection of resources for the resource center. Help us as we develop this resource center; take our online survey and share your needs and thoughts.

Sustainability Task Force

As part of Planetree’s commitment to community health, Enloe has created a committee that is working to expand the medical center’s recycling and ecologically sustainability practices that are good for people and the environment.

Arts & Entertainment: Nutrition for the Soul

Through a partnership with California State University, Chico, Enloe continues to develop and support music as a healing art at the medical center and in the community. Most recently, Enloe collaborated with the university’s Music Department to create a "Music for Healing and Wellness" independent study course for senior music majors. The course began with the Fall 2008 semester.

Healthy Communities

Planetree is also designed to be a catalyst for health and wellness in the larger community. As a community partner with Chico State, Enloe is a co-sponsor of the Soweto Gospel Choir, which will perform at Laxson Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 and Joe Craven with Laura Love & Orville Johnson, who will bring their music to Laxson Auditorium on Thursday, April 30, 2009.  In addition to giving these campus performances, the Soweto Gospel Choir and Joe Craven will also offer outreach activities to patients at Enloe Medical Center. Enloe's sponsorship of these programs reflects the Planetree philosophy that the arts and community are important aspects of a healing environment for everyone. Our first Planetree seminar, “State of Grace,” took place at the medical center's conference center. It highlighted how art, creativity and intuition can rejuvenate caregivers and patients. We will continue to offer education events for the community and health professionals.

Planetree Book in Common

Enloe employees and community members are invited to read a “book in common” each quarter and share discussion over a brown-bag lunch. The next book will be "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser. The book discussion will take place Jan. 6 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Enloe Conference Center. All events are listed on our online community calendar.

Lyon Books of Chico will donate a percentage of the sale of Enloe's Books In Common to Enloe's Planetree fund, benefiting Planetree initiatves at our medical center.

Our first book selection for the Planetree Book in Common was “A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose” by Eckhart Tolle and the second was “Healing Conversations: What to Say When You Don’t Know What to Say” by Nance Guilmartin.
