Enloe Neurosurgery & Spine Program

Procedures offered by the neurosurgeons at Enloe Medical Center include the following:

Spine Surgery Procedures

  • Spinal fusion: Your surgeon joins together, or fuses, some of the bones in your spine. This limits the movement of these bones, which may help relieve your pain. You may also feel more flexible after a fusion because you can move with less pain.
  • Decompressive lumbar laminectomy: In this procedure the part of the vertebra called the lamina is removed. This takes pressure off nerves in the low back and helps reduce symptoms.
  • Microscopic/minimally invasive lumbar discectomy: During surgery, herniated disc material that is pressing on a nerve root or spinal cord is removed.
  • Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: Your surgeon will make a horizontal or vertical incision on either side of your neck, a portion of a damaged disk is removed and two or more vertebrae are joined together.
  • Cervical laminectomy for spinal stenosis: In this procedure, the lamina and spinous process are removed to provide more space for the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  • Carpal tunnel decompression: During this procedure the transverse carpal ligament is opened. This will relieve pressure on the median nerve.
  • Ulnar nerve decompression: A small incision is made and all points of nerve compression are released.
  • Dorsal column stimulator: An electronic device is implanted to help treat chronic pain
  • Kyphoplasty: This is a procedure to help relieve the pain of a compression fracture. It is done by strengthening your spine with special cement.
  • Treatment of traumatic spinal injury: Surgery may be performed in order to stabilize the spine with screws, metal plates, and other devices. The goals are to enhance preservation and return neurologic function.
  • Removal of spinal cord tumors
  • Operative and non-operative treatment for spinal infections

Brain Surgery Procedures

  • Image-guided brain surgery
  • Minimally invasive brain surgery
  • Craniotomy: This is the surgical removal of benign and/or malignant brain tumors by opening the skull.
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery: This procedure provides a small number of very focused, high-dose radiation treatments using a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. The treatment is localized to the tumor, enabling the normal tissue around the tumor to receive little or no radiation.
  • Intracranial shunts: Shunts are usually placed in the lateral ventricle and divert excess spinal fluid into the abdominal cavity. This technology is utilized to treat many forms of hydrocephalus.
  • Treatment of traumatic brain injury: We provide specialized care in our Neuro-Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and can provide surgical intervention to remove blood clots and monitor intracranial pressure with the latest in neuro-technology.
  • Treatment for brain abscess and other associated brain infections: Operative and non-operative treatment options are available.
