Enloe appoints Psychiatrist Samuel Brown, MD
as Medical Director of Behavioral Health
CHICO, Calif., SEPT. 15, 2011 – Samuel A. Brown, MD, a local psychiatrist and member of Enloe Medical Center’s Medical Staff, has been named medical director of Enloe Behavioral Health. Dr. Brown has lived in Chico for 20 years and worked as medical director of hospice care for a local home health agency for the past 12 years.
“I am really impressed with Enloe’s terrific comeback. I am happy with the mood at the hospital,” said Dr. Brown, referencing the patient-centered care focus that has been underway at the hospital over recent years.
Dr. Brown’s initial goals for the Behavioral Health program include further strengthening the interdisciplinary nature of the psychiatric team, continuing a strong focus on quality of care and promoting awareness of the program throughout northern California. Dr. Brown is a hospital-based physician, meaning he works only with patients in the hospital, and does not take outside office appointments.
Enloe Behavioral Health, located at the medical center’s Cohasset Road site, offers an inpatient program for patients experiencing the debilitating effects of depression, anxiety, mood and thought disorders, and psychosis. The program assesses patients and teaches skills to help patients better cope after leaving the hospital. A multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists works together to care for patients on the unit. Enloe Behavioral Health is licensed to serve up to 30 patients. It is the only voluntary inpatient psychiatric unit between Sacramento and Oregon. Prior to Dr. Brown’s hospice work, he served as medical director of Enloe’s behavioral health unit under its previous ownership. Along with providing direct patient care, Dr. Brown has research experience. He conducted and coordinated research projects in psychiatry treatment at Napa State Hospital. Additionally, he had a private practice in Santa Rosa, Calif., for more than 10 years. Outside of his clinical skill and knowledge, Dr. Brown enjoys using the crafts of construction. For example, he took a sabbatical in the mid-1980s to rebuild a turn-of- the-century inn.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Brown attended Amherst College in Massachusetts and received his bachelor’s degree in biology. He earned his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in Connecticut and completed his residency at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr. Brown is board certified in Psychiatry as well as Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
