Enloe begins implementation of powerful radiotherapy technology

CHICO, Calif., SEPT. 27, 2011 – The Enloe Regional Cancer Center’s Radiation Oncology department is undergoing a $4 million technology upgrade. The center recently implemented new software that enables faster and more targeted treatment planning, and construction is underway to allow for the installation of a new state-of-the-art linear accelerator in October.

“The new linear accelerator delivers a faster dose rate than most typical linear accelerators, and can target tumors even as they move and change over time,” said Michael Baird, MD, Executive Director of the Enloe Regional Cancer Center. It can reduce treatment times by at least 50 percent.

Enloe will be the fifth medical center in California to offer this new system, called TrueBeam from Varian Medical Systems. TrueBeam is also available at Stanford Hospital, Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento, U.C. San Diego, and UCLA Medical Center.

Linear accelerators deliver x-rays to a patient’s tumor to destroy cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. Enloe’s new machine will replace one of the two linear accelerators that have been in operation and will add new services that previously required out-of-the-area referral. The system is expected to be operational by year’s end.

Varian’s TrueBeam enables a different approach to treating cancer. It features a built-in CT scanner that allows more precise radiation therapy. A daily CT scan is conducted prior to treatment, and the machine will automatically move the patient to the exact position to target the tumor. Precision of the system is measured in increments of less than a millimeter. TrueBeam synchronizes all of its functions and performs accuracy checks every ten milliseconds throughout a treatment. It also continually measures critical data points as a treatment progresses. Improved accuracy can shorten the duration of a course of treatment from weeks to days.

At the Enloe Regional Cancer Center, medical director Dr. Grace Yuh and radiation oncologist Dr. Anne Dawson diagnose, treat and manage common cancers as well as unusual and rare tumor types. They administer treatments with close collaboration of radiation therapist, nurses, physicists, dosemetrists and other staff members at the Cancer Center. Treatment options at the Cancer Center include Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, High Dose Radiation Therapy, Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation and prostate cancer treatments.
