Enloe to open a Tuesday evening farmers market on June 2

CHICO, Calif., May 28, 2009 – Enloe Medical Center will open a weekly certified farmers market beginning Tuesday, June 2, to provide locally grown fresh produce to the public. The market will take place on Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. from June through September in the north parking lot of the Enloe Conference Center, 1528 Esplanade (at E. 5th Avenue), in Chico.  

Local farmers will sell organic and non-organic items, including seasonal produce, such as berries and squash, as well as oranges, fresh cut flowers, olive oil, jam and nuts. Additionally, Enloe health professionals will provide healthy tips and activities to market goers. Tips and activities will vary each week and may include fitness information, nutritious recipes and blood pressure screenings. The Enloe Health Learning Center, a new community library, is open during the Enloe Farmers Market hours.

Neighbors and the community are encouraged to walk or bicycle (wearing a helmet). Parking for vehicles and bicycles is available in the Enloe Parking Structure at West 6th and Magnolia Avenues. Pets and smoking are not permitted at the market, according to state health regulations.

The farmers market is a Planetree “Healthy Communities” Initiative. Planetree is a patient-centered approach to health care that Enloe has begun to implement. It has many aspects, including reaching beyond the boundaries of the hospital to help improve the health of the local community. The market was created to provide employees and neighbors with convenient access to fresh, locally grown produce.
