Dr. Donald Heithecker Receives New Physician Legacy Award
CHICO, Calif., May 2004 -- Donald Heithecker, M.D., an ear, nose and throat specialist, is the first recipient of the Physician Legacy Award.
The Enloe Medical Staff initiated the annual award to inject “something purely uplifting and positive” into the local medical community, said Marcia Nelson, M.D., Enloe’s chief of staff. The award honors a physician who has shown exceptional service and performance in medicine and in the community.
Dr. Heithecker is “the model of ethical, excellent medical care,” said Nelson. “This shows what kind of doctor we all want to be. He’s reliable, honest, dependable, thorough and calm.”
Born in Idaho, Heithecker graduated from Oregon Health Services University School of Medicine in 1961. He came to Chico in 1966 and has practiced here ever since. He was chief of staff at Chico Community Hospital and has served as chief of surgery at Enloe.
After 38 years in practice, Heithecker continues to care for patients in his office, Nelson said.
Nelson’s March call for nominations generated 50 submissions of local doctors, who where nominated by other physicians, people who work in the medical field and members of the public. Nelson stated that the submissions for the remaining 49 nominees would be kept and reconsidered next year along with new nominations.
